Federer with problems in opening match – AO 2010 – Day 2
Roger Federer had unexpected problems with Igor Andreev in his opening match at the Australian Open 2010. The World No.1 played at a lower level and allowed the Russian to grab the first set 6-4, after leading with a break.
In general the entire match was filled with breaks of serve. Roger recovered fast and stepped up a gear to win second set, 6-2. The third one was really tight with numerous breaks for each side. Andreev ended up with 3 set points, on serve. He failed to grab them hitting 3 unforced errors.
Federer grabbed the last break of the set to send it into a tiebreaker, which he comfortably won. Andreev collapsed in the 4th set both mentally and physically, to surrender 0-6.
Day 2 did not provide any major upsets. All seeds went trough to the next round, both in the Men’s as in the Women’s Singles tournaments. Read more
2010 Australian Open Day 1 – Summary
The 2010 Australian Open registered its first victim right from the start. The first match at the Rod Laver Arena saw the 2008 Champion defended. Maria Sharapova’s 7 match winning streak ended very steep, after her first match at the 2010 edition.
Maria Kirilenko was the one that produced the upset, defeating fellow Russian star in 3 sets 7-6,3-6,6-4. Sharapova had plenty opportunities to clinch the first set but managed to lose it at the tiebreaker. She won the 2nd but struggled from the beginning, in the decider.
Juan Martin Del Potro is another favorite who had some problems today. However his where minor. The 2009 US Open Champion surprised everyone as he dropped a set against American, Michael Russel. The Argentinian won his first round match, 6-4,6-4,3-6,6-2. Read more
2010 Australian Open Charity Match for Haiti People
Some of the most important tennis stars playing at the Australian Open 2010 have participated to a charity match on Sunday, only a day before the official start of the tournament.
Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Andy Roddick and Lleyton Hewitt represented the Men’s tournament, while Serena Williams, Kim Clijsters and Samantha Stosur represented the Women’s competition.
The charity event has been named ‘Hit for Haiti’ and it raised $185,000 until now. The gala has been played at the Rod Laver Arena and all the ticket revenues where donated for the people of Haiti. Read more
2010 Australian Open Seeds
The seeds for edition 2010 of the Australian Open have been published. Both Men’s and Women’s seeds lists contain the best ranked players in the world.
Seeds are used at the draw for the Grand Slam’s main table. The seeding system prevents top players from colliding in the early rounds of the tournament. This means that the top seeds will have the chance to meet only in the second week of the Open starting with the quarter-finals. No one from the top 4 seeds can meet earlier as the semifinals.
Roger Federer is the top sed of the Men’s Singles tournament, while defending champion, Serena Williams, is seeded no. 1 in the Women’s race. Read more
