Baghdatis triumphs against Gasquet to win Sydney Open

marcos baghdatis image Marcos Baghdatis won the Sydney Open after a straight sets, 6-4,7-6, success against a comeback player, Frenchman, Richard Gasquet.

The Cypriot recorded his 4th ever tournament win managing to win 4 out of the 8 finals he ever played.

The Sydney Open final started with Baghdatis controlling the encounter and winning the first set 6-4. The second part of the match was interrupted by rain.

Gasquet managed to take an impressive 4-1 lead, but Baghdatis came back to level at 4-4. The set was decided at the tiebreaker won comfortably by the Cypriot, 7-2.

The Sydney Open success climbs Baghdatis on the 35th spot of the ATP rankings. He started the week ranking No. 42.

Marcos will play unknown Italian player, Paolo Lorenzi, in the first round of the Australian Open. Baghdatis stated today at the press conference that he hopes to get 2,3 wins at the Aussie Open which will build on his confidence and allow him to get deep into the second week of play.

Richard Gasquet has a more difficult opponent for the opening round of the first Grand Slam event of the season. He will face seed 20, Mikhail Youzhny.
