Marcos Baghdatis photo Marcos Baghdatis managed an important success today at the Sydney International. The Cypriot defeated home favorite and former no. 1, Lleyton Hewitt, for a place in the semifinals.

The Medibank International is the last possible event before the Australian Open and is the tournament where players try to make their last adjustments for the first Grand Slam event of the season.

Hewitt won this event 5 times in his career, but this time he had to stop in the quarter-finals as he did in 2009. Lleyton provided a solid performance so far this week and started the day perfectly snatching the first set 6-4. Everything changed at the half of the 2nd set. Baghdatis took control of the encounter and won the next 2 sets 6-2,6-3.

Hewitt explained, after the match, that he is not upset and that he was mixing his shots and trying new things to improve his game for the Open. I guess that we will see starting with next Monday if this really the cause of his defeat.

Marcos Baghdatis had his best tennis result in Australia. The Cypriot reached the 2006 Australian Open final and recorded his best Grand Slam appearance ever. He has a solid and noisy group of supporters in Australia, formed by the region’s community of Cypriots.

Marcos is currently ranking no. 42 in the world. He isn’t seeded at the Australian Open 2010, while Lleyton Hewitt has been assigned seed no. 22.

Baghdatis will face Mardy Fish for a spot in the final where he could meet Julien Benneteau or Richard Gasquet.
