Some of the most important tennis stars playing at the Australian Open 2010 have participated to a charity match on Sunday, only a day before the official start of the tournament.

Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Andy Roddick and Lleyton Hewitt represented the Men’s tournament, while Serena Williams, Kim Clijsters and Samantha Stosur represented the Women’s competition.

The charity event has been named ‘Hit for Haiti’ and it raised $185,000 until now. The gala has been played at the Rod Laver Arena and all the ticket revenues where donated for the people of Haiti. Read more

marcos baghdatis image Marcos Baghdatis won the Sydney Open after a straight sets, 6-4,7-6, success against a comeback player, Frenchman, Richard Gasquet.

The Cypriot recorded his 4th ever tournament win managing to win 4 out of the 8 finals he ever played.

The Sydney Open final started with Baghdatis controlling the encounter and winning the first set 6-4. The second part of the match was interrupted by rain.

Gasquet managed to take an impressive 4-1 lead, but Baghdatis came back to level at 4-4. The set was decided at the tiebreaker won comfortably by the Cypriot, 7-2. Read more

Isner snatches Auckland Open title

john isner photo John Isner managed to win his first ATP title in Auckland. The American defeated top seed Arnaud Clement to grab the trophy and 250 ATP points.

The final was a 3 set thriller, with Isner snatching the first set 6-3. Clement came back to win the second set 5-7. The decider could have gone either way, with Isner saving a match point. The American found two more huge serves to score 2 aces and send the match into a deciding tiebreaker.

Isner stepped-up a gear to lead 3-1 and 6-2 before clinching the title. The American is currently ranked No. 33 in the world and he just made it into the 2010 Australian Open seeds list, benefiting from Simon’s withdrawal, caused by a right knee injury. Read more

Dementieva crushes Serena and wins Syndney International

dementieva wins in sydney Elena Dementieva eased pass, world No. 1, Serena Williams, to grab the 2010 Sydney International title. The Russian star crushed Serena to obtain a comfortable straight sets win.

The Sydney International final lasted 75 minutes and saw Dementieva breaking 5 times Serena’s serve. The last time was in the game that brought her the title. Elena managed a love break and snatched the glory.

Serena Williams obtained her best performance at the Sydney Open. Her previous best run was the semifinal stage. So, this means good news for all Serena fans. The American won the Australian Open 4 times so far without managing to play the final in the Sydney warm-up tournament. This year she got to the final, what should this mean? :)

Baghdatis defeats Hewitt in exciting Sydney International encounter

Marcos Baghdatis photo Marcos Baghdatis managed an important success today at the Sydney International. The Cypriot defeated home favorite and former no. 1, Lleyton Hewitt, for a place in the semifinals.

The Medibank International is the last possible event before the Australian Open and is the tournament where players try to make their last adjustments for the first Grand Slam event of the season.

Hewitt won this event 5 times in his career, but this time he had to stop in the quarter-finals as he did in 2009. Lleyton provided a solid performance so far this week and started the day perfectly snatching the first set 6-4. Everything changed at the half of the 2nd set. Baghdatis took control of the encounter and won the next 2 sets 6-2,6-3. Read more
