2010 Australian Open Day 1 – Summary

maria sharapova backhand The 2010 Australian Open registered its first victim right from the start. The first match at the Rod Laver Arena saw the 2008 Champion defended. Maria Sharapova’s 7 match winning streak ended very steep, after her first match at the 2010 edition.

Maria Kirilenko was the one that produced the upset, defeating fellow Russian star in 3 sets 7-6,3-6,6-4. Sharapova had plenty opportunities to clinch the first set but managed to lose it at the tiebreaker. She won the 2nd but struggled from the beginning, in the decider.

Juan Martin Del Potro is another favorite who had some problems today. However his where minor. The 2009 US Open Champion surprised everyone as he dropped a set against American, Michael Russel. The Argentinian won his first round match, 6-4,6-4,3-6,6-2.

Rafael Nadal, the title defender, had an unsure start against local youngster Peter Luczack. The Australian had multiple chances of breaking Nadal in the opening set. The Spaniard took control of the match after comfortably winning the tiebreaker 7-0. He eventually closed the match in straight sets, 7-6,6-1,6-4.

The two Andy’s, Murray and Roddick, had no problems today in booking their place for the 2nd Round. They both won in straight sets against Kevin Anderson and T. De Bakker.

3 Men’s Singles tennis matches where postponed today because of the continuous rain showers which troubled organizers during this inaugural day of the AO 2010.

The Women’s Singles tournament did not provide any other major surprise, besides the Sharapova one. Yanina Wickmayer dodged dangerous bullets fired by Romanian, Alexandra Dulgheru, and managed to win only just, 10-8 in the decider, after dropping the first set 1-6 and winning the second 7-5.

Other favorites won their matches in style, in straight sets. Kim Clijsters, Justine Henin, Elena Dementieva and Dinara Safina.
